March 2020

As a 2019-2020 National Endowment of the Arts Big Read grantee, Miami PAL was able to host events during the months of October and November, promoting literacy. With the help of the Miami-Dade Public Library systems we held 12 poetry sessions, provided 500 free copies of our book “Hustle,” by David Martinez to patrons, and hosted David Martinez, and Pablo Cartaya for book readings at local libraries in the City of Miami.

Our Pal participants had a great time throughout Super Bowl week. 12 of our cheer and football athletes were able to introduce the Super Bowl captains onto the stage at NFL Superbowl Opening Night at Marlins Park. Our mentees were able to be a part of a Super Bowl cleanup, helping to clear the shorelines of trash and debris at Virginia Key Beach. We were also able to take 30 youth from our after-school STEM program at Edison Park K-8 to the NFL experience held at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

February 20-23 8 of our TLC and Explorer and mentees and 4 staff were able to be a part of the 2020 Region 6 National PAL Summit in Williamsburg, Virginia. While at the conference, the mentees were able to learn tips of financial literacy, goal planning, and communication. Also, the mentees were able to advice from some amazing speakers including: Lt. Governor of Virginia Justin Fairfax, Marques Ogden and Kemba Smith. The trip was amazing and for most of the mentees it was their first time experiencing being on an airplane and experiencing snow.
